During the great war on Scarro, Davros tricked the Thaals and Kaleds to destroy one another in order to accelerate acceptance of his Mark 3 travel machine – a device he had created to house the creatures the humanoids of that planet would eventually become.

During a press conference at which Doctor Who (#4 Tom Baker) was present, he announced that he had given his travel machine a name. Dalek.
